 ABOUT COACHING

What is coaching?

Whether you are new to coaching or have worked with a coach before, experiences can vary greatly depending on your coach’s skillset, training, background, style and personality. Finding the right fit for your needs and preferences is key!

You can learn more about my background and approaches here

In general, coaching is...

  • a solution-focused process. In practical terms, this means that we will spend a lot more time thinking about positive change and future vision rather than on the details and specific genesis of your current challenges.

  • a self-directed journey, which means that I won’t give you ready-made solutions or tell you what to do. Instead, my role will be to support and empower you to identify and implement your own authentic answers and insights that emerge in our structured work together.

What is the difference between coaching, therapy, or consulting?

Coaching is different from therapy, consulting or teaching. Without going into depth about any of these related by distinctly different approaches, some key characteristics of coaching include:

  • Driven by questions. In coaching, you are developing your own insights and solutions.  A good coach will guide and support you on this journey without giving you any quick fixes or ready-made answers. This is why thought-provoking, perspective-shifting questions – sometimes embedded in unusual experiential settings – are the coach’s most critical tool.

  • Focus on the future. Coaching has a clear forward-looking gaze. The past may be occasionally visited to understand current habits and entrenched patterns (so that they can be addressed and overcome if appropriate), but this may not always be the case or necessary.

  • Action-oriented. Investigation, exploration and increased self-awareness are an important means to an end, which is empowering you to take meaningful next steps and create positive, sustainable change in your life. The idea is to leave you resourced to build the life you want to live, so that you can become the person you want to be (and we are never done with “becoming ourselves”).

Role of the Coachee (you)

You need to be willing to co-create a trusting and respectful relationship with me, and I will ask you to communicate honestly, provide feedback on what works for you and what doesn’t, and commit to the time and energy to fully participate in the session and in between. Please arrive to on time to our appointments and let me know well in advance (minimum 48hrs) if you need to change our scheduled session time.

For coaching to be successful, you will need to be open to be gently challenged, take responsibility for your journey and experience, and understand that you are solely accountable for your decisions and actions regarding any goals you may be setting yourself.

I also ask you to respect my Intellectual Property as share with you during the coaching. This means that you must not share or reproduce any of my materials or resources that I provide you with you unless you have my explicit permission to do so.

How long will the coaching process take?

This can vary and depends on your needs, preferences, and goals!

Most people find that deeper or more stretched issues can be solved or adequately worked through in just one hour. Coaching is a relationship built on trust, and like all relationships it goes through stages. Sometimes, it can take a while to “peel the onion”, process the new insights hidden in each layer, and moving carefully ahead until the core of a decision, challenge or relationship issue is reached.  This process should neither be rushed nor unnecessarily drawn out.

For this reason, my “signature coaching program” includes six sessions across 2-3 months which strikes a healthy balance and provides ample opportunity to reflect, adjust, and process the new experiences and insights.

Some clients then continue with further sessions on an on-need basis, either directly seamlessly building on the journey so far, or after some time.

Having said that, I fully understand and acknowledge, that no process fits all, and I can offer bespoke, customised solutions for each client I have the privilege to work with.

How long are the sessions?

Standard session are 60 minutes, to be held virtually or in-person as agreed. Occasionally longer session may be required, e.g.  to complete an assessment debrief.

Please note that I usually start a coaching relationship with an in-depth values exploration which will create the backdrop for examining any challenges or issues you would like to discuss and set the foundation for meaningful future goal setting. This first session will be 90 minutes long.

What does it cost?

Individual sessions for self-funded clients are usually AUD $250/hour, including follow-up support (e.g. handouts and/or tailored resources) where applicable and useful.

Session bundles are available.
